I spent the day in Boise ID driving around to different places in town. I stopped by the Boise Vet center and met the people there. They explained exactly what they do for Veterans. They offer some great services to Veterans in the community. Boise ID has really been affected a lot by economic factors, including lagging employment numbers and the housing market overall.

Overall real estate in the Ada County/Boise area was devastated in the past few years. It was hit much harder than most places in the United States due to the fact that we had such an increase in values in the early 2000s. We had further to fall than most places, since we had shot up so drastically due to the influx of population moving up from California because of our low prices. We took that nose dive in value, but it looks like we’ve had some consistency in maintaining where values are at now. We are pretty close to what 2000 numbers were, and in my opinion, Ada County prices will probably stay steady over the coming year in 2011 and probably be on the rise quicker than most places that surround us like Seattle and Portland, whose markets fell after ours did. That is just my opinion, but that is what I see happening overall in Ada County.

VA loans in Clark County Washington are currently at an all-time high. VA loans are just behind cash offers for the majority of all home purchases  being completed right now, which is pretty much unheard-of, since there is no military installation within the vicinity of Clark County WA. Most people don’t know or understand that there are so many Veterans out there. VA home loans are one of their best options.

The Community Military Appreciation Committee would like to invite you to attend a Memorial Day ceremony at the Vancouver Barracks, 987 McClellan Road on Monday May 30th at 11am.  They are asking the military attendees to come in uniform and civilians to wear business casual.

"Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. "

The event is sponsored by Waste Connections.

Come join us at the Bellingham Health Fair, Saturday, May 7th. Topics will include healthy cooking ideas, exercise, weight management and how mood affects health. "About 10% of Whatcom County residents have diabetes, according to Brinn" so the entire community needs to come to this event.
As someone who just found out a close family friend had been diagnosed with diabetes I think this is an important event that everyone should be aware of. The number of people being diagnosed with diabetes is growing and the majority of cases is type 2, which is linked to lifestyle, age, lack of exercise, obesity, and let’s not forget family history.
Come out and learn what you can do to help prevent diabetes, which is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. When the number of people with the disease is growing, especially in children and teenagers find out what you can do to prevent this from affecting your family.
The fair will feature 12 educational seminars taught by local heath care professionals, free screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, feet and eyes. There will also be 25 health exhibitors at the event.
The event is $10 and will be held at Bellingham High School, 9am -2pm Saturday May 7th. Registration is required. You can also register online at peacehealth.org/diabetes.
For more information please contact Cindy Brinn at 360-788-6620 and CBrinn@peacehealth.org.
